The report builder. Every report starts from a question.
01
Context
Mosaik sells analytics to fashion and home retailers with 20 to 200 stores. Store and regional managers needed weekly numbers, but every report went through a small team of analysts with a two-week queue.
Customers were leaving for simpler tools with worse data. The brief: let a store manager build the report they need on a Monday morning, with numbers the analysts would still sign off on.
02
My role
I led design on the report builder for Saltwork Studio, with a second designer, a product manager, five engineers and a data scientist.
01
Interviewed 18 store and regional managers about the decisions their reports support.
02
Designed the report builder around questions, not charts: “How did my store do last week?”
03
Worked with the data scientist on guardrails that stop misleading comparisons.
04
Ran a closed beta with 12 retailers and rewrote the onboarding twice.
03
Process
Nine months, from interviews to general release. Managers used a working prototype on their own data from month three.

Results
70%
Reports built without an analyst
1 day
Average wait for a report, down from two weeks
91%
Customer renewals in the next cycle, up from 76%
Within six months, managers built 70 percent of reports themselves and the analyst queue fell from two weeks to a day. The analysts moved on to forecasting, and renewals rose to 91 percent in the next cycle.
Store managers now build their own reports on Monday morning. Our analysts finally have time for the questions that need them.

Reflection
We hid the guardrails at first to keep the builder simple. Managers trusted the numbers more when they could see why a comparison was flagged. Showing the reasoning from the start would have been simpler, not harder.
