01
Context
Fieldnote helps product teams store and search their user research. By 2025 its customers had thousands of interview notes, but finding an answer still meant asking the one researcher who remembered where it was.
Search returned documents, not insights, and teams had stopped trusting it. The brief: turn a filing cabinet into something a product manager can question on a Tuesday afternoon, and get a sourced answer before the meeting.
02
My role
I led product design from discovery to launch, working with the head of research, a product manager and six engineers.
01
Ran 24 interviews with researchers and product managers across 9 customer teams.
02
Defined the insight model with the head of research: a claim, its evidence and a confidence level.
03
Designed and prototyped the insights board and the evidence view.
04
Ran weekly usability sessions and wrote the specs engineering built from.
03
Process
Four phases over seven months, with a coded prototype in front of customers from week three.

Weekly active teams in the first quarter
Fieldnote launched insights to every customer in March 2026. Teams now ask the repository before they ask a person, and research is cited in roadmap reviews twice as often as before.
She asks the question nobody else in the room asked, then shows up the next morning with a prototype that answers it.

Reflection
I would bring engineering into the insight model a month earlier. We redesigned the confidence score twice because it was hard to compute, not because it was hard to read. Next time, the data model and the interface get prototyped together.
