The six steps of the Halden account opening flow

The new flow: six steps from identity check to first card.

01

Context

Halden Bank is a digital-first regional bank with 300,000 retail customers. Its mobile account opening took 14 screens and asked for the same address three times. Six in ten people who started never finished.

The bank could not change what regulation required. The brief was to keep every legal check and still make opening an account feel like the first good experience with the bank.

02

My role

I was the only designer on the project, working with a product manager, four engineers and the bank’s compliance lead from the first week.

01

Mapped every field in the old flow to the rule that required it, with the compliance lead.

02

Removed duplicate questions and moved identity checks to the bank’s existing eID service.

03

Designed and prototyped the new six-step flow for iOS and Android.

04

Tested each version with 40 customers, including people opening their first account.

03

Process

Five months, with compliance in every review. Nothing shipped that the risk team had not seen first.

01

Audit

Listed all 61 fields in the old flow. 19 were required by law, 42 were habits.

Median time to open an account

The new flow went live in September 2024. Seven in ten people who start now open an account, and the median time fell to four minutes. The compliance team adopted the field audit as its template for every new product.

Noa cut our account opening in half without bending a single compliance rule. Our risk team signed off in one meeting.

Reflection

I should have tested with older customers earlier. The eID step that felt instant to most people confused those who rarely used it. A short explanation screen fixed it, but it came two weeks late.
